SKYWALD PUBLICATIONS
Skywald Comics was an American comic book publisher active primarily in the 1970s, founded by Sol Brodsky, Israel Waldman, and Herschel Waldman. The name "Skywald" comes from a combination of the founders' names. Skywald was best known for its horror-themed magazines, including "Nightmare," "Psycho," and "Scream." These publications were part of the "Horror-Mood" style, a unique blend of psychological horror and supernatural elements, which set them apart from other horror comics of the time. Skywald's titles were magazine-sized and aimed at an older audience, allowing them to bypass the restrictions of the Comics Code Authority, which governed traditional comic books. Their stories often featured dark, graphic themes, and they were known for their mature, atmospheric artwork and experimental narrative techniques. Although Skywald Comics developed a cult following, the company struggled financially and faced stiff competition from larger publishers like Warren Publishing (known for its similar horror magazines like "Creepy" and "Eerie"). Skywald ceased publishing in 1975, but their comics remain a cherished part of horror comic history, especially among collectors and fans of 1970s horror culture.
