The 10 Most Iconic Pre-Code Horror Comics

Writer: PS ArtbooksPS Artbooks

Before the Comics Code Authority clamped down on the horror genre in 1954, pre-code horror comics flourished with terrifying stories, grotesque imagery, and chilling moral lessons. Publishers like EC Comics, Harvey Horror, and others created some of the most memorable horror comics of all time. Here are ten of the most iconic pre-code horror comics that defined the genre and left a lasting impact on horror storytelling.

1. Tales from the Crypt (EC Comics)

Perhaps the most famous pre-code horror title, Tales from the Crypt was known for its gruesome stories, ironic twists, and its iconic horror hosts: the Crypt-Keeper, the Vault-Keeper, and the Old Witch. Stories often revolved around supernatural revenge, mad science, and twisted justice.

2. Chamber of Chills (Harvey Horror)

Harvey Comics, better known for kid-friendly titles, shocked audiences with Chamber of Chills, which pushed the limits with grotesque imagery and disturbing narratives. Its lurid covers remain some of the most famous in horror comic history.

3. Witches Tales (Harvey Horror)

Another standout from Harvey Horror, Witches Tales specialized in supernatural horror, filled with witches, ghosts, and demonic forces. The comic’s eerie atmosphere and relentless frights made it one of the best of the pre-code era.

4. Adventures into the Unknown (American Comics Group)

The first-ever ongoing horror comic series, Adventures into the Unknown set the stage for all horror comics that followed. It featured a mix of ghost stories, monsters, and eerie folklore, making it a groundbreaking title in the genre.

5. Web of Mystery (Ace Comics)

This anthology series explored supernatural tales, often featuring haunted houses, cursed artefacts, and terrifying monsters. Its striking covers and suspenseful storytelling made it a fan favourite.

6. Strange Mysteries (Superior Comics)

Strange Mysteries leaned heavily into the bizarre, with stories featuring grotesque transformations, alien horrors, and twisted fates. It was a perfect example of pre-code horror’s willingness to push the envelope.

7. Tomb of Terror (Harvey Horror)

Another gruesome entry from Harvey Horror, Tomb of Terror delivered nightmarish tales of monsters, revenge, and the supernatural. Its bold and shocking cover art cemented its place as a classic.

8. Eerie (Avon Comics)

One of the first stand-alone horror comics, Eerie paved the way for the horror boom of the early '50s. It featured unsettling, often surreal horror stories with a pulpy, noir-like atmosphere.

9. The Beyond (Ace Comics)

The Beyond was known for its creepy supernatural tales featuring ghosts, vampires, and other creatures of the night. Its dark and eerie storytelling made it a standout among horror comics.

10. Beware! Terror Tales (Fawcett Publications)

A lesser-known but influential horror title, Terror Tales was packed with grim tales of murder, revenge, and supernatural horror. It featured some of the most shocking pre-code horror covers of the time.

Despite their short-lived dominance, pre-code horror comics left a lasting legacy. Their gruesome imagery and bold storytelling influenced generations of horror writers, artists, and filmmakers. Today, collectors seek out these classic issues, and publishers continue to reprint them for new audiences to enjoy.

I love all of these. PS Artbooks have yet to issue:

  • a second (and third?) volume to Strange Mysteries. I know certain issues were not available on the internet. I bought, scanned, and posted them on DCM.

  • A decent Horrific hardbound. I know #3 is stratospherically priced, but your previous hardcovers missed #1, 2 and #13

  • More volumes of Dark Mysteries, Haunted Thrills, Fantastic Fears. Mostly coming out in the Classic Horror collections. Check out DCM. I have bought, scanned and uploaded 7 issues in the last few months.
