Matt Baker, often hailed as a pioneer in the comic book industry, was one of the first prominent African American artists in the field. Born in 1921, Baker's career in comics began in the 1940s, and he quickly made a name for himself with his exceptional artistic talent. Baker is most celebrated for his work on romance comics, particularly "Phantom Lady" for Fox Feature Syndicate. His exquisite renderings of the title character, as well as his mastery of the female form, set a new standard for the genre. Baker's ability to infuse romance comics with a sense of glamour and sophistication earned him a devoted following and helped redefine the medium. Beyond romance comics, Baker made significant contributions to various genres, including crime, horror, and Western comics.
